Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions about British Sign Language and our services.  If you have any question that’s not been covered, please feel free to contact us at info@signsay.co.uk

What is BSL?
BSL stands for British Sign Language. BSL is the form of Sign Language commonly used in the UK as communication for the deaf or those with hearing impairments. BSL uses hand gestures, facial expressions and body language. British Sign Language was officially recognised as a language by the UK government in 2003.
Is BSL the same as ASL?
ASL is American Sign Language and the simple answer to the question is no. But as with a lot of sign language from around the world, there are similarities.
How long does it take to learn British Sign Language?
To learn British Sign Language in depth, it can take 2 to 3 years to get through all the levels. BSL Level 1 is the most basic level and depending on your own abilities, level 1 can be fairly easy to learn. We teach BSL Level 1 over 5 weeks and time to time we do 1-day intensive courses. BSL Level 2 takes around 15 weeks, including exams. The first 2 levels are great starting points and can be enough to communicate in sign language.
How many levels are there in British Sign Language?
In total you can be qualified from level 1 to 6.
What Qualifications can I get?
We currently only offer BSL Level 1 and 2 courses as well as qualifications through our accreditors. We are accredited by Signature and CPD. When you’re ready to take your British Sign Language exams, you can choose which accreditor you prefer.
Does the course include exams?
Our courses do not include the price of the BSL exams, this is because we have a lot of customers who want to learn BSL just for the knowledge. You can wish to take the exam if you want to.
Do I need previous experience?
BSL Level 1 is perfect for beginners and no previous experience is needed, but the willingness to learn is good to have.
